Tom, Conley and Jack go through the slew of new cards on the M10 unofficial spoiler and Conley gives a great break down on the new card ratio being potentially misleading and some missed design facets. Check out the new judge promos for Nationals of Stifle and Windswept Heath. The next textless MPR promos will be Terminate and Negate. We also hear from Mark Rosewater’s twitter that Tiago Chan’s invitational card (Denying Channel) has been pushed back from Zendikar to the “Lights, Camera, Action” block.

It’s M10 spoiler season starting on the official WoTC site AND we will be getting our own M10 spoiler to release on Friday, June 26th! Tons of discussion regarding the official and unofficial M10 cards seen so far including the official Siege Gang Commander and the controversial Lightning Bolt. We have the complete deck lists for Duels of the Planeswalkers. Check out the fantastic article by Mark Rosewater about the removal of mana burn. It is time to vote for the Magic shoe competition over at Ryz and you can check out some Monday Night Magic listener entries here and here. Richard Garfield has a great new game design podcast for his design company, Three Donkeys, that you should check out. A new graphic anthology of the planeswalker web-comic titled “Path of the Planeswalker” is now available. Also, we discuss the new Patrick Chapin book, “Next Level Magic“, available as a PDF download. Lastly, we have the June 19th Banned and Restricted list update with some notable changes in Vintage.

Jack is trying out some Jund Cascade Aggro and still enjoying Turbo Fog with some innovations of adding Spiteful Visions to make “Turbo Smog”. Tom is mastering the puzzles on Duels of the Planeswalkers and enjoying every minute of it.

We have Conley, Gavin and Eric joining Tom this week to discuss the bomb that landed on Wednesday with the rules changes that come with M10. Read the full article here and the main rule change people are discussing is a change to combat that combat damage does not use the stack. Obviously lots of controversy, but some good examples and discussion to be found here. You can also read thoughts from Zvi Mowshowitz on Top 8 Magic, Randy Buehler, Power 9 Pro. PT Honolulu was this past weekend with Kazuya Mitamura crowned champion, but representing us all was Conley Woods who made the top 4 and brought home $13,000! We are also proud to hear that Duels of the Planeswalkers will be coming out the XBLA on June 17th for 800 MS points ($10). We have also confirmed that there will be 3 planeswalkers in Zendikar, one of which is a returning planeswalker, and one of the new is Nissa Revane. Also, another Duel Decks has been announced, Liliana vs Garruk! Some M10 reprints have been confirmed (Shivan Dragon, Nightmare, White Knight) along with the release of the intro pack images giving us a glimpse of a few new cards. Bunch of news about the Planechase release and it’s connection with Zendikar. We also talk about WoTC official contest to design art for an upcoming show with RYZ where you can win $1,000 and an uncut foil sheet, check out the current entries and enter here along with a useful template. What Have We Been Playing?
Eric has been enjoying some awesome 8 and 16 man cube drafting. Jack has been dabbling in some Arcanis the Omnipotent EDH and the Jund Cascade Aggro deck. Tom has been playing more limited EDH and finding ways to kill his new nemesis, Diviner’s Wand.

Monday Night Magic #157 – Hrbek the Planeswalker

Mea Culpa from Tom, thank for the correction regarding the Warp World deck from the Indianapolis PTQ was in the top 8, but did not win the PTQ. The winners of the Agents of Artifice fan art competition have been announced and you see the winners here. Grand Prix Seattle was this past weekend and the winner was Yann Massicard playing Doran, Faeries was popular and we have a ton of MTGCast hosts in the running including Stan Bessey of Deck Builders placing 14th, Gavin in 73rd and Conley 187th. We also had Nick Bonham, Pedro Rodriguez, Bryan Greer and Shannon Ericson also doing well! Here is the general info for GP Seattle and here are the top 8 decklists. We have officially seen the M10 release and prerelease promos (Queen of Ants and Vampire Nocturnus) and confirm the use of the term “battlefield” for being in play. There is a great debate article on fivewithflores.com discussing some topics brought up in the latest The Magic Show regarding table shuffling and deck randomization. Randy Buehler posts on his blog some info on the block constructed metagame for PT Honolulu and a round-by-round coverage of his monthly MTGO championship. PT Honolulu is this weekend and wish good luck to Gavin and Conley! We also hear from Kenneth Nagle’s twitter that he will be previewing an M10 card at PT Honolulu.

What Have We Been Playing?
Gavin and Conley have been playing some Standard and likely turning their sights towards draft and block constructed. :^) Tom playing some more limited EDH and dreaming of busting out some Vanguard.

We also have an updated novel cover and sample chapter for the next Planeswalker magic novel titled The Purifying Fire. Some cool new WPN promos of Slave of Bolas and Marisi’s Twinclaws. The FNM promo for June is a cool “darker” art version of Mulldrifter. Eric scoops that we will be seeing more Duel Decks in the near future via Twitter with Elaine Chase.

Tom and Conley are here this week to bring you a whole bunch of news along with discussion of Standard, Regionals (including Turbo Fog with suprising showing of 5 color control in face of the BW / GW token surge) and more. First, we talk about the new Planechase (Vanguard 2.0) cards just announced. We also discuss the rumors started by this comment on the Daily MTG twitter feed regarding llamas and alpacas that may suggest an Incan theme for Zendikar along with the revelation by Mark Rosewater that we will have Planeswalkers in Zendikar. Check out the interview with Doug Beyer, author of “Alara Unbroken” on the Book Nook show on YouTube. Wizards announces the largest number of active DCI players ever at 138,500! We have a discussion on the Extended Hypergenesis Cascade deck and here is a nice review article with example decklists of the “haste” camp and “shroud” camp. We have another official preview of Duels of the Planeswalker on the WoTC YouTube page, but still no release time given. This Week in Magic
Kudos to WoTC for some pretty decent April Fool’s bits, including the most amazing draft viewer ever seen. It also confirmed that Terminate is Alara Reborn! We also discuss a few more cards spoiled via various magazines in the unofficial MTGS spoiler, including “Unscythe, Killer of Kings” (not an 80’s hair metal band). We also have the deck lists for the Alara Reborn intro packs and next week is the start of the official previews! Also, the very cool Divine vs Demonic duel decks come out on April 10th and we officially have the deck lists today via Mike Turian’s article! Check out the pics [1] [2] of the new DCI judge shirts. Alara Reborn news is here and we have some doozies. First, we have some scans of the Alara Reborn booster packs and starts the rumor of a potential return of Coiling Oracle. And, we also have 10 cards in the unofficial spoiler on MTGSalvation including a little gem titled Marisi Twinclaw showing a new usage of hybrid mana and confirming hyrbid mana in the set. And check out a scan of our Rumbling Slum-worty Spellbreaker Behemoth!

Judges start salivating for this Maze of Ith judge promo spotted in the wild.

And there was that little announcement about Zendikar and the crazy rampant rumors regarding it being an Aztec, Mayan, dinosaurs, pirates, you name it set.

We have scans of the Alara Reborn pre-release and release promos from a french advertisement poster. Pictures of the Alara Reborn Intro packs (english language) are also now out. Magic Online Customer Appreciation Week was announced today, check out the details and it runs from 3/23 to 3/30. Wizards has officially announced the next “From the Vault” set and is title Exiled. Exciting news is that it will feature cards that “were banned or restricted from the known realms of competition“, but will adhere to the reprint policy (sorry, no moxes). We also have the most recent update to the Banned and Restricted list with no changes to paper magic formats (official explanation), but it did sneakily announce a new MTGO format titled “Kaleidoscope” where all non-lands cards must be multicolored and will use the Extended card pool. Check out the new Demonic Tutor (with full card scan). Tomoharu Saito is crowned champion of GP Singapore with a revamped Naya Zoo deck!

Alara Reborn is confirmed to be the first all Gold magic set. Magic Online 2009 Championship Series has been announced and seems to be a form of a pro tour for online players. Nationals locations and dates have been announced. In the United States Nationals are being held in KC on July 24-27 (watch out for those Yu-Gi-Oh players). Check out this DCI Foil Judge promo Dark Ritual. Images of Intro packs for Alara reborn are out and the creatures showing through the front are all 2 color creatures. Knight of New Alara is the release card for the release parties being held on April 30 through May 3. MTGO v3 with major issues over past week and weekend – significant in-game and trading lag, players were unable to join or start new games. Master’s Editon 2 leaves the online store on March 25th. There will be farewell events as well as a “farewell pack” where you get 10 ME2 boosters and a free ME1 booster! Congratulations to Lino Burgold the Grand Prix Hannover Champion! GP Hannover had to cancel cash prize payouts and switch to product. Magic Cruise #2 has been announced and will be Feb 7-13, 2010.

This Week in Magic
The forums are a-buzz with the announcement on MagicTheGatherings.com Arcana with a partial spoiler card titled Ardent Plea for Alara Reborn that leads many to think it may be an entirely gold card set. We also have the name of the Alara Reborn pre-release promo to be “Dragon Broodmother”.

WoTC officially announces to extend MTG National invites to the invitees of the Yu-Gi-Oh nationals that were recently canceled. We also have spotted an awesome Nicol Bolas Playmat. Players are pretty pumped about the showing that an alternate art Demonic Tutor will be in the Divine Vs. Demonic Duel Decks! We also have some scans that show a promo full-art Blightning may be heading our way for FNM rewards.

GP Chicago crowns Gabriel Nassif winner of the largest domestic USA GP ever with around 1232 players. Check out the top 8 decklists. Also, make sure to read this fascinating story by Bill Starks about the professional thieve ring following the domestic GP circuit stealing bags and other valuables. Upcoming GP’s are in Hanover and Singapore and will be Extended format.

We have had a week to mull over the big announcement of “Magic 2010″ or “M10″ that is the major changes to core set with Tom, Gavin and Eric weighing in on the changes. Magic players every where were stunned by the announcement of the major core set changes coming with the next core set “Magic 2010″ or “M10″.

Aaron Forsythe was nice enough to take some time and talk about the core set changes, why we should be excited and how this set is going to rock. Hard. Check out the initial announcement on the official Wizards of the Coast site and then take a listen!

Some new tidbits is that we can definitely expect to see some M10 limited GP’s, PTQ’s and eventually PT’s. It was mentioned potentially FIVE M10 limited GP’s later this year! We also confirmed that Unsummon will be in the set, cards going back as far as Alpha and for sure up through Time Spiral and Planar Chaos and pretty sure Gravedigger will be making an appearance as well. Given the new cards and overall revamp of the core set, expect M10 to have a full preview week and the promotion that we expect from expert expansion sets.

Aaron also made Tom’s day by letting him know to watch for an awesome new Ooze in the M10 set, yeah baby!

We are happy to see that a great resource for storing and sharing decklists is back, MTGVault.com. Duels of the Planeswalkers is hopefully coming out in the next few months and we have heard some rumors of a March release, but no specific release date to be found on the official site. We also have new info on the Wizards Play Network and the Conflux Gateway kits designed for new / small tourney organizers! Scans are now available for the FNM promos for April and May: April is Merrow Reejery and May is Wren’s Run Vanquisher. For large tournaments, GP Rotterdam is this weekend, PT Kyoto in the next couple weeks and GP Chicago in the second week of March. Gavin (and hopefully Tom) will be attending GP Chicago!

‘Twas the week before pre-release and all through the ‘net, magic players were salivating with an entire spoiler at their behest. Yup, one week before pre-release and we have all 145 cards! Gavin and Tom both give their picks for limited, standard, extended and wild uneducated guesses at legacy.

This Week in Magic
We discuss an upcoming iPhone app tentatively called “MtgToGo”. We are also pumped to announce that Chris Otwell (of Road Warrior Otwell) got a Top 8 in the Denver PTQ with a version of RDK2K9. We also pay homage to Bill Starks and his awesome work on typing up all of the Day 2 decklists from GP:LA and a card breakdown. The official WoTC site has the GP:LA Top 8 deck lists.

A bunch of awesome spoilers this week. First is Path of Exile, a new Swords to Plowshares variant. We also three new Scepters, Scepters of Dominance / Insight / Fugue with many players especially excited about the Scepter of Dominance. We also have a bunch of info about the upcoming Nicol Bolas planeswalker card with the ability to destroy non-creature permanents, control creatures and a last ability “better than Cruel Ultimatum“! Who doesn’t love some tasty functional reprints, we have the new Gaea’s Might in the form of Might of Alara and the reprint of the 2/2 dual color with protection from enemy color last seen in Invasion (e.g. Shivan Zombie). And lastly, a crazy rumor of a card named Blood Tyrant that supposedly gets 5 +1/+1 counters when a player loses a game. Time to get those Shahrazads!

This Week in Magic
Bunch of updates regarding 11th Edition and other tidbits from the magic round-table held at Worlds 2008. We have a bunch of rumored Conflux cards from trusted sources and are sharing them with you: [zesty234 thread] a 0/1 for G creature with exalted that taps for bant colors, Exotic Orchard that is a land-based Fellwar Stone, Obelisk of Alara and vote on which card to “spoil” on Christmas Eve! We have previews of four more cards from a german magazine, Kartefakt. Little Birdy gives us a Dragon and decent wall as well. And we also have scans of all five Intro packs!

Other magic news is the January FNM promo is Magma Jet. There were no changes to the Banned and Restricted list for December 20th, so no changes to elves and no changes to Bitterblossom. And celebrate a Magic Online Holiday Celebration with a number of cool events and a way to get your own foil promo Wooly Thoctar. And don’t forget to check out this amazing wallpaper image of Nicol Bolas about ready to smack down a whole gang of planeswalkers.

It is all about Worlds 2008 in Memphis this week. Congratulations to Antti Malin of Finland who is the new World Champion and to Team USA of Paul Cheon / Sam Black / Michael Jacob for winning the World Team Championship. Tom and Gavin had a blast meeting listeners, doing interviews with Mark Rosewater and Aaron Forsythe, Ahoy and Unhinged drafting, gunslinging and more. Tom got to spend some quality time (and filmed it) playing with the upcoming Xbox 360 game, Duels of the Planeswalkers. Big news of the week is the announcement of a large number of layoffs from the digital games division at WoTC, and includes some well known names like Randy Buehler. This Week in Magic
MTGO V3 promo set has been revealed and player are generally excited, most likely be used in similar fashion to MPR to reward players for participating in online events, check out the set list here. We have scans of the Worlds foil promo Treva, the Renewer and GP foil promo Chrome Mox. The December Banned and Restricted list update has arrived with no changes to paper magic and help define the Pauper format for MTGO, it also has the sneaky change of allowing for changes later in the month, e.g. after Worlds. Wizards is rewarding judges with a new foil promo Living Wish!
